About this project

Unbound is a living, digital exploration of Black history as American history.

The A–Z Journey offers a structured pathway into the architecture of the past. Each letter serves as an entry point into a moment, movement, or idea that shaped the nation. From policy to protest, migration to education, cultural renaissance to contemporary witness, the series reveals how systems were built, contested, and reimagined. The alphabetical framework creates clarity, but the stories within it reveal complexity. Each entry stands alone while also contributing to a larger pattern.

The Constellation expands that framework across time and geography. It maps the entries relationally, illustrating how events, ideas, and communities connect beyond chronology. Rather than presenting history linearly, Constellation presents it as interconnected. Movements influence one another. Migration reshapes culture. Policy produces consequences across generations. The visualization underscores that history travels, overlaps, and reverberates.

Music & Movement operates as both archive and connective tissue within this structure. It traces how sound has preserved memory, transmitted coded knowledge, and sustained organizing traditions across eras. Spirituals correspond to survival under enslavement. Blues follow the routes of migration. Gospel strengthens collective resistance. Hip hop documents contemporary conditions in real time. Music does not sit beside history in Unbound. It moves through it, illuminating how culture sustains movements and carries meaning forward.

Together, the A–Z Journey provides structure, Constellation reveals interconnection, and Music & Movement demonstrates how memory travels.

Unbound invites reflection not only on what happened, but on how those histories continue to shape the present.
